What is Couple Therapy?
Couple therapy is working with people in an intimate relationship in order to help them to resolve problems that for whatever reason they have not been able to figure out on their own to their mutual satisfaction. It involves all parties sitting down with a trained therapist, discussing their issues, thoughts, and feelings. By this, each person can decide what, if and how they might want to make some changes individually in order to make the relationship grow.
It is important to note that when working with couples, Lori maintains a relationship with each person, with a primary focus on your relationship. That means that while sometimes it might feel like she is "taking sides", she always has your relationship at heart. She always keeps in mind your relationship goals and guides you toward them.
Lori believes that regardless of the problem, all members of the relationship have contributed to it in some way. The good news is that if you have the power to help create the problem, you also have the power to make it better!
How do I know if I need therapy?
Every person and couple goes through challenging times. How well you handle those times, or how much stress you can tolerate varies from person to person.
If you find that your usual ways of dealing with things aren't working, or that the problem is persisting longer than you or your partner are happy with, don't ignore it! It's much easier to deal with problems when they are small than when you are on the verge of a breakdown or divorce.
Even if the problem has been around for a long time, and you feel there is no hope, try therapy anyway. If you are able to recognize a problem, and are committed to making a change, Lori might be able to help you see a way to do so!
